INTERVIEW: ROY MOLLOY

Alex Cameron and his 'good friend and business partner' Roy Molloy (horn), alongside Holiday Sidewinder (synth & vocals), Henri Lindstrom (light percussion) and 'Juice' (bass guitar), have had a career defining 12 months. As well as becoming best pals with The Killers and playing arenas across the world, including the world-famous Madison Square Garden, Cameron, Molloy and Co. have been selling out their own headline shows across the world. Mixing infectious pop songs with a slice of truth and a whole lot of comedy, they produce one of the best live shows around. Good vibes, good people, good music.

Roy Molloy has become a cult hero among the Alex Cameron faithful. His stool reviews are a key component of their live sets and he has become a social media guru too. His 'good cars' series on Instagram are a must see. Meanwhile over on Twitter he's spreading respect and laughs to his ever-growing disciples.

So we got Mr. Molloy over to The Rodeo and had a natter. Here's what he said, in the order he said it.

1) When did you and Alex Cameron start out and how much has changed since the beginning?
I guess the beginning was when I moved in next door to him when we were six. His mum made him come play with me cause she thought I seemed lonely. The business partnership commenced officially about 20 years after that when Alex brought some demos into a pizza shop we were workin' at together in Sydney. Since then the amount of change is staggering. We've traveled the whole world. We're selling out gigantic rooms. We went from a very normal existence to quite a unique one in the space of about five years.

2) How's it been touring the world with The Killers, how did you meet Brandon Flowers & will we ever see you rock a gold suit like Brandon is doing?
Touring with the Killers is awesome. They take such good care of us. Brandon emailed Alex one day out of the blue havin', I assume, found the music on the internet. We'd just played to about four people in a Tallahassee record store an we're driving to the next town, an Alex kind a turned to me and said "I think Brandon Flowers just emailed me".

Al was rockin' a lovely silver suit for ages there in the Jumping The Shark years, but he sweat through it and it had to be discarded. We took it to a laundromat and this Chinese lady just shook her head and handed it back to us. Wouldn't even take our money.

3) What made you first pick up 'the horn'?
I was a little kid, and the public school system at the time had this program where you could rent an instrument and get lessons real cheap. I remember they had us all in the hall with this sort a display of instruments, and at the time I thought Lisa Simpson was pretty cool, so I went over an picked up a sax.

4) On Instagram you regularly feature 'good cars', what's your favourite 'good car' you've seen?
Man. Too many to count. I've been fixated on the 2002 Hyundai Sonata for a good long while now.

5) The stool reviews are becoming one of the highlights of your live shows, which city has provided you with the best stool?
On the last run the highest score went to my London stool. Cantilevered stainless steel in a kind of "Z" shape format. Nice white pleather seat. A beauty.

6) What's next for you and the gang?
Write and record album three and stay working in between. We don't plan on stopping. That's for sure.
